beehiiv vs Ghost (2026): Which Newsletter Platform Should You Pick?

This comparison isn’t sponsored by beehiiv or Ghost. The links to both platforms are affiliate links: if you sign up through them I may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. It never changes my verdict.

I’ve been testing beehiiv and Ghost side by side, and while both involve newsletters, they’re built for completely different outcomes. Choosing the wrong one doesn’t feel wrong straight away. It shows up months later, when your list isn’t growing the way you expected, or when you’re paying for tools outside your platform to do things that should have been built in.

So instead of running through a feature list, this comparison breaks it down by what you’re actually trying to build. If you want to try either one, here are my links to beehiiv (20% off your first 3 months, or use the code SCOPE at checkout for the same discount) and Ghost.

Quick answer

  • Best for a newsletter business: beehiiv
  • Best for growing your list: beehiiv
  • Best for design and long-form publishing: Ghost
  • Cheaper with paid subscriptions at 1,000 members: Ghost, if you don’t need automations

The core difference between beehiiv and Ghost

Here’s the simplest way to think about it, and it decides most of the choice:

  • Ghost is a blog platform that sends newsletters. Publishing comes first, and email is one of the ways your work gets distributed.
  • beehiiv is a newsletter platform that has a website and blog. The newsletter is the product, and everything on the platform is built to grow and monetize it.

Those sound similar, but they really aren’t. Which one fits you depends on which of those descriptions matches how you think about your publishing.

Ghost: a blog platform that sends newsletters

Ghost logo

Best for content-first publishers

Ghost is a publishing platform at its core, and its blog and website experience is excellent: clean and well designed. If you care about how your site looks, Ghost gives you more control than almost any other newsletter platform, including beehiiv. You can buy a theme from the marketplace, have a developer customize it, and never touch the design again. It just works, and it looks great.

Ghost is also open source and run by a nonprofit, with no venture capital behind it. For a lot of creators that matters: there’s no investor pressure changing the platform’s direction or introducing monetization decisions that work against publishers.

Where Ghost excels. The content editor is one of the cleanest available. Paid subscriptions are built in from the Publisher plan up, and Ghost takes 0% of that revenue; you only pay your payment processor. For discovery there’s a recommendations feature, the Ghost Explore network, and strong SEO fundamentals baked into how the platform is structured.

Best fit: a content-first publisher. If you write long-form articles, essays or journalism, and email is one of several ways you distribute your work, Ghost is built around that.

The trade-offs.

  • Automations are very basic. For years Ghost had none at all, not even a welcome email. In June 2026 it added welcome email sequences for new free and paid members, still in beta. Anything beyond that, like upsell or win-back flows, needs a third-party tool on top of your Ghost subscription.
  • Segmentation is limited and not designed for complex audience management.
  • Double opt-in is always on. Every new subscriber has to confirm their email before they’re on your list, which quietly reduces your list growth every day. More on that below.
  • Support is slow, and real design customization often needs a developer or comfort with theme code.

beehiiv: a newsletter platform with a website

beehiiv logo

Best for a newsletter business

beehiiv is built around one idea: the newsletter is the business. Everything on the platform reflects that.

Growth tools. This is where beehiiv excels. The recommendation network lets other beehiiv newsletters recommend yours to their audience, and you recommend others in return. Paid recommendations (called Boosts until October 2026) let you pay other newsletters in the network to send subscribers your way, or earn money by recommending others. And the referral program rewards your own subscribers for bringing in new ones. Ghost has free recommendations too, but no paid recommendations or built-in referral program, and over time these tools compound into a real growth advantage.

Analytics. beehiiv shows you where every subscriber came from, with open and click rates broken down by acquisition source. That tells you which channels are working and which aren’t worth your time or money. Ghost has had built-in analytics since Ghost 6, covering traffic sources, member growth and average open and click rates, but it doesn’t break engagement down by where your subscribers came from.

Automations and segmentation. Welcome flows, upsell sequences and win-back campaigns are all built in, with no extra tool needed. Segmentation is more flexible too, with dynamic and static segments and include/exclude logic built for how a newsletter business actually works.

Monetization. You get paid subscriptions, an ad network, paid recommendations, digital products, and a sponsorship storefront on the Pro plan. It’s a complete revenue system inside the platform, and beehiiv takes 0% of your subscription revenue.

Best fit: someone building a newsletter as a business. If growing your subscriber count, charging readers and attracting advertisers is the model, beehiiv is built for that from end to end.

The trade-offs.

  • It’s venture capital-backed, so its long-term direction is tied to investor expectations in a way Ghost’s nonprofit structure avoids.
  • The design ceiling is lower. The website and email editor are solid and have improved a lot, but they’re not as customizable as Ghost’s.
  • The best features need a paid plan. Paid subscriptions, automations, paid recommendations and the referral program start on Lite. The free plan is a solid starting point, and it now includes the website, podcast and community, but it isn’t where the platform’s real strength is.

The growth gap most comparisons skip: double opt-in

Ghost’s double opt-in is a growth cost that compounds quietly. Every new subscriber has to click a confirmation email before they’re added to your list, and a meaningful share of people never do. They just disappear.

On beehiiv, double opt-in is off by default: someone signs up and they’re on your list instantly. You can switch it on when you want it, for example to filter out fake signups. Add beehiiv’s free and paid recommendations and its referral program, and the gap in list growth between the two platforms over six or twelve months can become very significant.

If growing your subscriber count is a core goal, this difference matters more than most of the features in this comparison.

Pricing compared

PlanPrice (billed yearly)What you get
beehiiv FreeFreeUp to 2,500 subscribers, unlimited email sends, website, podcast, community, recommendation network
beehiiv Lite$49/moPaid subscriptions, ad network, paid recommendations, referral program, up to 10 automations, 3 publications
beehiiv Pro$95/moAdds unlimited automations and subscription tiers, sponsorship storefront, branding removal, webinars and coaching, 10 publications
Ghost Starter$15/mo1 staff user, basic design settings, up to 1,000 members
Ghost Publisher$29/moCustom themes, integrations, paid subscriptions, advanced analytics, 3 staff users, up to 1,000 members
Ghost Business$199/mo15 staff users, up to 10,000 members

The fair comparison is Ghost Publisher at $29 against beehiiv Lite at $49, since those are the cheapest plans with paid subscriptions. Ghost looks cheaper, but Publisher only comes with basic welcome sequences, so if you need upsell or win-back automations you’ll be paying for a third-party tool on top, which brings the real monthly cost closer to beehiiv. The gap grows with your list, but more slowly than you might think: at 10,000 subscribers, billed monthly, Ghost Publisher is $105 and beehiiv Lite is $139. Ghost’s Business plan at $199 is a big jump that most independent publishers won’t be able to justify.

beehiiv’s free plan is also a real advantage for getting started: Ghost(Pro) has no free plan, only a free trial, unless you host Ghost yourself.

Prices at 1,000 subscribers or members, billed yearly, checked on October 2, 2026. Billed monthly, beehiiv Lite is $59 and Pro is $109, and Ghost Starter is $18 and Publisher $35. Ghost Starter only goes up to 1,000 members. beehiiv replaced its Scale and Max plans with Lite and Pro on October 1, 2026, so the video shows the old plans. Both platforms charge more as your list grows. Check current prices before you buy.

Final verdict

The decision comes down to one question: are you a blogger who distributes content by email, or a newsletter publisher building an audience as a business?

If long-form writing is the focus and you want full design control, a developer-friendly ecosystem and a platform with no VC strings attached, Ghost is the right choice. The trade-offs are real, but for the right kind of publisher they’re worth it. If growing your subscriber count, charging readers and earning directly from your newsletter is the model, beehiiv is built for that. Its growth tools, analytics and monetization options go further than Ghost’s.

Neither one is worse. They’re built for different kinds of publishers, so pick the one that matches what you’re actually building. Still comparing other options? See my guide to the best newsletter platforms, which also covers Substack, Kit and MailerLite.

FAQ

Is beehiiv better than Ghost?

For a newsletter business, yes: beehiiv has better growth tools, deeper analytics, built-in automations and more ways to monetize. For a content-first blog or publication where design matters most, Ghost is the better choice.

Which is cheaper, beehiiv or Ghost?

beehiiv has a free plan for up to 2,500 subscribers; Ghost(Pro) doesn’t. With paid subscriptions at 1,000 members, Ghost Publisher is $29 per month and beehiiv Lite is $49 (both billed yearly). Ghost is cheaper on paper, but if you need automations beyond a welcome sequence you’ll pay for a third-party tool on top.

Does Ghost have email automations?

Only basic ones. Since June 2026 Ghost has welcome email sequences for new free and paid members, in beta. For other automations, like upsell or win-back flows, you need a third-party tool such as Zapier or n8n.

Does Ghost take a cut of paid subscriptions?

No. Ghost takes 0% of your paid subscription revenue on the Publisher plan and up; you only pay your payment processor’s fees. beehiiv also takes 0%.

Can you turn off double opt-in on Ghost?

No. Ghost requires every new subscriber to confirm their email before they’re added to your list. On beehiiv, double opt-in is off by default and you can switch it on if you want it.
